Former Teammates Reunite After Trade: KIA’s Han Jae-seung Set to Face NC’s Son Ah-seop in Just Four Days

Weekend Series Brings Familiar Faces Back Together

The Hanwha Eagles kicked off a three-game weekend series against the KIA Tigers on August 1 at Gwangju’s KIA Champions Field. Among the key storylines is the expected debut of Son Ah-seop in a Hanwha uniform, just days after being traded from the NC Dinos on July 31.

Trade Details Reshape Both Rosters

The recent flurry of trade activity between KIA and NC has reshaped both teams. On July 28, KIA acquired pitchers Kim Si-hoon and Han Jae-seung, along with infielder Jung Hyun-chang from NC. In exchange, NC received outfielders Choi Won-jun and Lee Woo-sung, and infielder Hong Jong-pyo.

Just three days later, NC made another deal — this time with Hanwha. The Dinos traded veteran outfielder Son Ah-seop in exchange for ₩300 million in cash and a third-round pick in the 2026 rookie draft.

From Teammates to Opponents in Days

Until this week, Kim Si-hoon, Han Jae-seung, and Son Ah-seop wore the same jersey. Now, they’re on opposite sides. Jung Hyun-chang has yet to join KIA’s first team, but Han Jae-seung is already making an impact.

On July 31, just hours after the trade, Han Jae-seung made his KIA debut in a relief appearance against the Doosan Bears. He pitched 1⅔ innings, allowed just one run, and was credited with the win. His performance helped KIA break a seven-game losing streak with a narrow 3-2 victory.

Han Jae-seung Looks Forward to Seeing Son Again

After the game, Han Jae-seung learned of Son Ah-seop’s trade and couldn’t hide his anticipation about their upcoming meeting. “We’re playing Hanwha right away,” he said with a smile. “I need to say hello to Ah-seop again.”

Reflecting on his own trade, Han added, “When I was traded, Ah-seop gave me a lot of encouraging words. Now it’s his turn to join a new team. I definitely want to catch up and wish him well.”

Thankful for the Win and Support from KIA Fans

Speaking about his first win with KIA, Han Jae-seung said, “We were in the middle of a losing streak, so I went out there determined to do whatever it took. Every time I step on the mound, I want to pitch with confidence and earn the trust of the coaching staff.”

He also expressed gratitude to KIA fans: “When I got off the bus today, the cheers were incredible. Even after the inning, fans were calling my name. I’m really thankful. I’ll keep working hard to give them more performances to cheer for.”

Son Ah-seop Bids Farewell to NC Fans After Four Years

As Son Ah-seop prepares to don a new uniform, he took time to say goodbye to NC fans. On August 1, the outfielder appeared in a farewell interview posted on NC Dinos’ official YouTube channel, titled “Four Years of Passion – Goodbye Son Ah-seop.”

In the interview, Son awkwardly introduced himself, saying, “I guess I should now say I’m Son Ah-seop of the Hanwha Eagles,” acknowledging the strange feeling of switching teams.

He thanked the NC fans for their unwavering support: “I truly appreciated all the love and cheers I received here. I regret not being able to deliver even better results. It’s hard to describe, but I feel a mix of disappointment, excitement, and worry. But I’ll do my best to prove why Hanwha chose me.”

Leaving Changwon With a Heavy Heart

Leaving Changwon isn’t easy for Son. “This place felt like a second home,” he said. “Looking back, I think I only showed 20 to 30 percent of what I had in mind. That’s my biggest regret — it’s on me for not living up to expectations.”

He also recounted a touching moment on his way to the farewell interview. “A fan somehow found out and came to the stadium crying in front of me. It broke my heart. I’m so grateful for all the love.”

Four Years of Memories in an NC Jersey

Son reflected on several unforgettable moments from his time with NC. “I still remember the heartbreak of losing Game 5 of the 2023 playoffs, the record for most hits, and winning the batting title — something I’d never done until I joined NC. Despite the ups and downs, I’ll carry only the good memories with me.”

As he closes this chapter of his career, Son emphasized his determination to make the most of his new opportunity. “At Hanwha, I want to prove that I was worth the choice. I’ll refocus and give everything I’ve got in this next phase.”
