Game Recap: Eight Runs. Again.
- The Giants scored eight runs tonight, for the second game in a row. Which is quite the feat for this team — as Chris Haft noted on Twitter, the previous season-high for runs-scored in back-to-back home games was 10. They also hit three home runs at home for the first time this season. Oh yeah, and the last time the Giants scored 8+ runs in back-to-back games? World Series: games one and two.
- Eric Surkamp pitched 5.2 scoreless innings, but wasn’t very impressive at all. Zero strikeouts. He only induced one swinging strike the entire night. He’s just missing bats at all. In 16.2 innings, he now has a grand total of 6 strikeouts, and five walks. Keith Law had a couple interesting tweets on Surkamp tonight: he says he thinks Surkamp could maybe be a serviceable #5 starter in the NL, but not a #4. As he points out, Surkamp “has faced 66 non-pitcher Astros and Padres and fanned 5.” So in spite of a shiny ERA, Surkamp hasn’t really dazzled.
- Jeff Keppinger drew two walks tonight. Not particularly rare — he’s done it 19 times in his career, but this is the first multi-walk game of 2011 for Keppinger. Kind of amazing. And sad.
- Comment-starter: Two Giants, Cody Ross and Carlos Beltran, each had multiple hits tonight: they combined for five hits, two home runs, and a walk in total. Both will be leaving for free agency after this season, and the Giants could very conceivably re-sign one of the two. Given projected costs, who would you rather have?

I like Beltran, only because they need to change something with this offense. If they bring back Ross, they likely wouldn’t bring back Beltran– so even if Ross could hit at his career mark, there’s a lot more needed to fix this offense. If Beltran can stay healthy, I think he’s the first piece.
Surkamp had big strikeout rates in the minors. He looks tentative with the curveball. If he ever gets his confidence in the bender at this level, I think he can move up to a #3.
Easy question on Ross vs Beltran. Beltran!
Even though he is injury prone i like the middle of the line up of Posey, Beltran, Sandoval, Huff then Belt can bat 7th, or flip Huff/Belt whatever. I think they can afford to carry Crawford and bat him 8th.
Also, if i counted right don’t the Giants lead the season series with the Padres 10-6? and didn’t you have a bet with a Padres blogger when you were at Splashing Pumpkins?
Yep. With RJ’s Fro. Looks like I’m gonna win the bet.
