2012 Giants ZiPS Projections
Highlights:
- Brandon Belt has the third-highest projected OPS+, behind Carlos Beltran and Pablo Sandoval.
- Unlike the Bill James projections, ZiPS projects Melky Cabrera (106 OPS+) to be a significantly better hitter than Andres Torres (91 OPS+).
- Gary Brown is projected to be essentially a league-average hitter — the same OPS+ (99) as Cody Ross and Nate Schierholtz.
- Brandon Crawford is at a 70 OPS+, among the worst Giants hitters whose projections are listed. This would constitute a very minimal improvement in 2012.
- Eric Surkamp, 142 IP, 101 ERA+, 116 K/59 BB.

Anyone have an interpretation on Belt’s huge reverse platoon split as a rookie? Lefties who crust lefties and flail at righties are the most unusual platoon type. I’m thinking it’s a good sign of his willingness to go with pitches, but it still seems odd.
You think Surkamp is why Jonathan Sanchez became expendable?
Hmm…I think not entirely, but he probably played a large role in that. The Giants probably saw him as expendable anyway because of Vogelsong/Zito, but I’m sure they felt much more comfortable trading him given Surkamp.
So yeah, I guess so.
